So it normally takes me about 3-4 days to get into ketosis, without any help from exogenous ketones. This means I eat 50g or less of carbs per day, drink a bulletproof coffee every morning and do 45minutes of HITT for the first two days to really get my metabolism going and deplete my stored glycogen quickly.

To be honest with you, it’s not easy.

Especially when you’ve fallen off the Keto wagon for a week or two, and your cravings are back like wildfire.

So with many unsuccessful attempts at getting back into Ketosis, I came across KETO OS (Ketone Operating System) which as been all the rave with entrepreneurs and athletes on the internet.

KETO OS are exogenous ketones that you mix with water with the goal of boosting your body into Ketosis.

Basically, rather than taking 3-7 days of strict low carb diets (under 50g for most), KETO OS claims to:

Put you in Nutritional Ketosis in 59minutes and delivers superhuman performance fuel…

While putting your body into fat burning mode, boosting abdominal fat loss, suppressing your appetite, giving you sustained energy, increasing awareness and all the while reducing brain fog.

If you’re curious to see what effects KETO OS has on a person who is already really fit and has her eating in check (she mostly eats under 50g of carbs a day) then check out nourish caveman’s detailed post on her experience with KETO OS and how it has affected her weight loss plateau.

She says…

“Now is Keto OS helping me? So far I really gotta say yes and this is how:

  1. No hunger which for me is a really big deal being insulin resistant and I’m always hungry.
  2. More energy and that is also a big deal when you have tired adrenals and low thyroid. So other I am happy with the progress it’s not even been a week but I’m seeing good results.”

I was pretty excited by this because constant hunger and insulin resistance is also a big issue for me.

So, as I was doing my research into KETO OS and I discovered a whole new world of exogenous ketones that I never knew about!

I learned about how people are using it to achieve a state of ketosis faster and easier. Also, in what forms they come in, how we should take them for different purposes (or when to not take them at all), the different price points, flavors, varying effectiveness etc.

KETO OS: What flavors do they have?

There are 4 flavors: Maui Punch, Chocolate Swirl, Orange Dream and KETO KREME

Taste: 4/5

Effects: Ketosis reached within 40 minutes, Better sleep, enhanced focus (in the zone feeling)

Consistency: 5/5

Calories: 41cals

This is Pruvit’s newest product, which claims to be 40% more effective than the rest. The truth of the matter is, this actually works. The formula is a lot more potent than the rest, and you can really feel it working in about 10mins.

Taste: 4/5

Effects: Reduces hunger significantly. and aids rapid weightloss (with low carb diet & 45mins HIIT, 3 days a week), increased awareness and focus (zero jitters), cravings have disappeared, sustained enerygy

Consistency: 5/5

Calories: 56cals

Servings: 30

Orange dream formula has developed since its released and has improved in taste (so yummy!). Think orange cream push pops from the ice cream truck in your childhood days!

Cons: For people not used to eating a lot of good fats, expect your tummy to rumble and tumble for the first few days. Understand that your gut still lacks the enzymes to break down a lot of fats, because they are so used to carbs! So take it slowly and don’t drink it every day. Listen to your body.

KETO KREME (coffee creamer)

Taste: 2/5

Consistency: 3/5

Effects: Not concentrated enough. Honestly couldn’t feel much. Stick to MCT or coconut oil in your coffee!

I was soooo disappointed with this product because out of ALL their products, I was excited to try this one the most! KETO KREME is basically a coffee creamer that claims to be packed with ketones and organic coconut butter.

Being the bulletproof coffee junkie and an avid traveler, I was sure this product was made for me! But low and behold…it’s like an overpriced MCT powder. I didn’t really feel anything and it didn’t upgrade the taste of my coffee that much either.

No points for Gryffindor.

Taste: 2/5

Effects:  Same as Orange Dream formula

Consistency: 3/5

Calories: 56cals

Servings: 30

This is exactly the same formula as Orange Dream but a much worse taste. The aftertaste is borderline chemical. You can definitely feel the effects, though. You can get into ketosis in under and hour and not feel hungry for a long time…and when you DO feel hungry, the hunger is super controllable and calm. I like the effects, but I’d stick to orange dream.

Final Verdict: Is it worth it?

Nope, it’s not worth it in my humble opinion.

For how much it costs, we can get products that deliver very similar results for a fraction of the price.

In summary, KETO OS does give you the awesome feelings promised…

Things like: laser focus mental clarity, decreased appetite (you’re not going to be hungry for carbs or sugar), and have solid sustained energy all day.

I would have this in my cupboard as a replacement for…say coffee or a RedBull…but the price simply doesn’t justify the ROI.

What Are The Alternatives?

I got introduced to this brand through the great Tim Ferris and his interview with Dominic D’Agostino. KetoForce creator, Patrick Arnold aka. “the father of prohormones,” is infamous for designing performance-enhancing drugs for athletes.

He’s now innovating in the ‘legal’ reamls of ketone supplementations and has since created breakthroughs in performance with the likes of Tim Ferris and other high performance people.

  • KetoForce, is the no BS, no fluff, no crazy marketing version of KETO OS.
  • It packs around 11.7g of BHB Salts (beta-hydroxybutyrate) per serving.
  • Taking it as pre workout makes me go for longer with less recovery time.
  • It suppresses appetite very effectively (I forget to eat lunch sometimes.)

***People have said they feel like their body is “eating its own fat”.

You don’t want to use this daily. Just as a pre workout for a powerful boost, and/ or 2-3 days of transitioning into ketosis. One bottle will last you a few months.

Perfect Keto Base (Chocolate Sea Salt Flavor)

Based on the majority vote, this is the most palatable Exogenous Ketone Supplement available right now. (I just ordered this last night, and I’m super excited to try it!).

I’m going to mix it with my protein shake in the morning and also add it to my KETO Hot Chocolate etc.

Although it doesn’t have the highest beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) serving up 11.3 grams per scoop, which works out to be 15 full-scoop servings or 30 half-scoop servings, it does have the best taste.

But if you’re looking for the biggest bang for your buck, go for Nutricost 4-in-1 Exogenous Ketone Supplement (which I also bought from Amazon), which has:

  • 500 Grams of Unflavored 4-1 Ketone Salts Per Bottle
  • Calcium, Magnesium, Sodium, & Potassium (Ca, Ma, Na, K)
  • 12.98g Beta-Hydroxybutyrate (BHB) Per Serving

Mind you, it wouldn’t taste anything near as good as Chocolate Seas Salt…but instead, you get straight up quality minus the fancy packaging and marketing.

Superclean energy.

I blend it with my morning coffee and shake it with my Starbucks pick-me-up when I’m on the road and it makes it so creamy and amazing.

Life saver for when I’m traveling (I’ve traveled with a big bottle of MCT oil before….not the smartest thing I’ve ever done).

MCT Oil & Brain Octane

This is the MCT Oil I personally use, by Vegan Society. Works well for me.

MCT oil is 6x more potent than coconut oil and Brain Octane is 18x more powerful than coconut oil.

These potent fatty oils metabolize most rapidly into Ketones.

If you’re looking for the ‘jet engine fuel’ kind of energy you get from KETO OS, you’re going to want to take MCT or Brain Octane, NOT coconut oil.

In my opinion, there’s not much of a difference (that you can feel) between Brain Octane and Pure MCT oil.

I put 1tsp in my coffee or my low carb hot chocolate in the morning, and it suppresses my appetite VERY effectively all day long.

There’s a huge difference in my cravings, on days that I go without it.

**WARNING: Start with half a tsp if you’re not used to digesting high levels of fats. For newbies, your gut doesn’t have enough enzymes that are efficient at breaking down fats. Overdo it and you could feel nauseated or have diarrhea. So little steps at a time!
